Wild boar are numerous in the eastern Carpathians of Transylvania. Also known as wild pig, they are a species of the pig genus Sus, part of the biological family Suidae. The species includes many subspecies and is the wild ancestor of the domestic pig, an animal with which it freely hybridises. Adult Carpathian boars are known to grow to an enormous size, many reaching weights of 200 to 300 kg.
